A steel detailer is a type of specialized technician. They make detailed shop or fabrication drawings for later use by steel fabricators or welders. These drawings form the basis on which fabricators or welders manufacture girders, beams, columns, and stairways. Steel detailing is used on all steel components of buildings and structures.
Steel detailers are sometimes called CAD technicians, CAD technologists, structural engineering technicians or technologists. They are a subcategory of structural drafting.
