Back in ’08 I had a band and we’d gotten a crazy idea in our heads that we could play at Singapore’s biggest indie rock festival, Baybeats. In order to play, you had to submit one of your original songs, and then audition if you were shortlisted. We didn’t have any original songs, so our singer wrote one and we hit the studio to record it just days before the submission deadline. The song was barely a minute long but that was easy to fix–we played it twice. Now it was barely two minutes long, which was… OK.
Somehow we got through to the audition stage. We hadn’t played “live” with our singer before and this was pretty much our first showing. On audition day, when it was finally our turn, we calmed our nerves enough to play our two-minute song and the judges asked to hear another. Silence. “We don’t have one yet. How about we play our song again?”
Miraculously, we made it to the final list of bands that would perform at the festival. That’s when the backbiting started. People (other bands, their fans, concerned members of the public) couldn’t believe we’d gotten in. We were criticised for many things including the simple construction of our song, featuring “just one guitar through a distortion pedal.”
I never got to say this to anyone so I thought I’d use this chance to set the record straight. Sorry guys, I didn’t even use a distortion pedal. I plugged my guitar straight into the amp. Deal with it.
Well that’s competition for you. I stayed away from contests after that–until I decided to join this year’s Singapore Blog Awards. Unlike the auditions, prepping for this didn’t give me palpitations. All I had to do was submit three posts that I thought represented the best of my blog, and if you’re curious about what I picked, you can read them here, here, and here.
Which brings me to what I really wanted to say: I made it to the finals! And no hate mail yet! I’m thrilled, but also half expecting someone to mail me to say they made a mistake. Until then, you can vote for me in the Family Category here. Or don’t vote for me, but vote for your favourite parent bloggers if you spot them. You’re allowed one vote a day (per category), and you can vote every day from now till June 23. Whether you choose to vote for me just once, or once daily, I’m grateful. Thank you for voting.
But mostly, thank you for reading.
